HUDUD Is Not The Answer - Karpal Singh

Chairman of the DAP, Karpal Singh said today that he does not agree with the proposed Mursyidul Am Pas, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat that the best way of dealing with crime and social problems is to amend the civil law and replaced with hudud law.

Karpal said the party can not accept any form of reform ongoing in the country.

"It is wrong for people like Nik Aziz spoke something can be introduced in the country. The Federal Constitution allows only the Penal Code and other civil law and there is no room for hudud law," he said at a press conference here today .

Best comment on the fact that the Chief Minister of Kelantan yesterday that it is appropriate to turn to hudud because he claimed the civil law now fails to control crime and social disease.

But, says Nik Aziz, the priority must adopt piety or religious education among the people first.

Karpal said he was very clear in the matter and did not want to argue with Nik Aziz for his views (Best) is what is stated in the Constitution which provides for a secular state.

Karpal said that in 1988, the Supreme Court decided that only civil law applicable in a secular country.

He said he does not agree with the government proposal to impose the death penalty in the case of disposable baby and add a better set up commission to investigate and identify the real problem
